OCTOBER 19, 2017 – Chelsea Jewish Lifecare has embarked upon a nine-month collaboration with Temple Beth Shalom in Melrose. Aptly titled, “Better Together,” the program involves middle school students visiting both the skilled nursing residence and the assisted living on the Peabody campus. The goal of the multigenerational program: to create interactive relationships and exchange information between the senior residents and the students.
“These middle school students are warm, friendly and such good listeners,” explains Ellen Gordon, Chelsea Jewish Lifecare Director of Resident Life. “Our residents are relishing talking with the students; it’s obvious that the students are enjoying the experience as well.” She added, “Both groups are learning from each other and fostering a sense of community that is a joy to behold.”
This past summer, Rabbi Allison Peisner of Temple Beth Shalom submitted a proposal for a grant that would connect students and elders. Once the grant was approved, Ellen Gordon and Rabbi Peisner developed a program involving the students visiting the Harriett and Ralph Kaplan Estates Assisted Living every month.
