Evelyn Rebecca (Cohen) Rieder, of Marblehead, died peacefully at home after a long illness on December 21, 2018, surrounded by her family, at the age of 98. She was the beloved wife for over 69 years of Sidney V. Rieder, who died on April 18, 2018. Born in Philadelphia, Penn., on August 25, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Meyer Cohen and Ida (Polonsky) Cohen.
Born exactly one week after women gained the right to vote, Evelyn was disappointed not to live to see a woman elected president of the United States almost a century later. Experiencing the struggles for gender equality both in and out of the workplace, she successfully went on to find her calling as an accomplished financial investor until dementia precluded her abilities.
She was predeceased by her daughter Sandra A. Rieder and is survived by her sons Steven M. Rieder of Burlington, and Ronald J. Rieder and his partner Martha Miller of Andover, and her brother Bernard Cohen of Delray, Fla. She was also predeceased by her brother Irving I. Cohen.
Evelyn’s remains will be interred at Waterside Cemetery Marblehead, along with those of her husband Sidney. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Evelyn’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601. Stanetsky-Hymanson Memorial Chapel, Salem had the honor of caring for Evelyn. For more information or to register in the online guestbook, visit www.stanetskyhymansonsalem.com.
