I was amazed to read that there was not a hint of public protest at the scene of the anti-Israel hatefest at UMass Amherst, other than one brave parent (“Hate has a new home at UMass Amherst,” Jewish Journal, May 16). Where was the Jewish Student Union, Student Alliance for Israel, ADL, AJC, and local synagogues? Why wasn’t there more than a single person protesting?
When the general public sees anti-Israel groups spreading lies without a word of opposition from the Jewish community, they will believe that what they hear is true – if it weren’t, why wouldn’t Jewish groups object? By saying and doing nothing, the Jewish community is aiding our enemies by making it appear there is no answer to their accusations.
Anti-Semitism is growing at an alarming rate. Being too apathetic or spineless to counter it will only ensure it continues to get even worse.
I truly despair of a community unable or unwilling to rise to its own defense.
