Letter: Hoping athlete will learn a lesson

My name is Jack Ruderman and I’m in 10th grade and part of the Lappin Foundation Teen anti-Semitism Task Force. The reason that I’m sending you this letter is because this week I’ve been hearing a lot of news about what the Miami Heat and NBA player Meyers Leonard has done and said while he was playing a video game.

I feel concerned, upset and disappointed over his act, so I want to do something about it by sharing this story with the sports world, Jewish communities and to important figures worldwide. The reason why Meyers Leonard’s act was wrong is because it offended so many people. Was he was possibly too caught up in the moment? Ironically he was playing this game for a charity event. I believed Meyers Leonard to be a better person and better role model. Hopefully he will learn a lesson from this incident and that other young athletes will understand the damage that comes with using anti-Semitic words.
