The exhibition “Japanese Sushi Girls” by photographer Hedva Rokach, currently shown at the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art in Haifa, Israel, is now on display at the Maine Jewish Museum in Portland, Maine. The exhibition, which has drawn public acclaim and generated significant buzz in the international press, showcases 16 photographs of Japanese women who decided, in the complex aftermath of October 7, to prepare sushi for soldiers on the front lines, sending letters of encouragement with each delivery signed by “the Japanese Sushi Girls.”
The exhibition attracted the attention of the Maine Jewish Museum, which reached out to the Haifa Museum. Now, in a joint project between the two museums, “Japanese Sushi Girls” will also be shown in the U.S. The two museums and the artist, Hedva Rokach, are collaborating to coordinate all exhibition details. The exhibition will be on display at the Maine Jewish Museum until Feb. 28.
“‘Japanese Sushi Girls’ is a moving and impactful exhibition that puts the spotlight on women in Israel’s lesser-known Japanese community and their deeply human, intrinsically nurturing response to a devastating war,” said Dawn La Rochelle, executive director of the Maine Jewish Museum.
