West Roxbury’s Temple B’nai Torah installs solar panels

As many congregations in the region attend to their aging brick-and-mortar assets, the Temple Hillel B’nai Torah (HBT) board chose not just to repair but to innovate. This summer, HBT took a step toward sustainability by installing solar panels while it was replacing its roof. Following a successful community fundraising effort, the 170-family congregation was able to achieve this climate-minded goal with support from the Jewish Solar Challenge (JSC).

“The roof was a liability that was long overdue for maintenance,” said Jason Arenburg, HBT co-president. “Thanks to support from the Jewish Solar Challenge and financial commitments from our community, we’re able to look ahead to a more sustainable facility.”

Founded in 2021, JSC, a project of the Schwartz-Rosman Foundation, facilitates the fiscal and energy sustainability of Jewish community institutions across the country through matching grants, education and advocacy. “This project will deliver environmental and financial benefits for decades to come, and we hope it inspires other Jewish institutions throughout New England to pursue solar, as well,” said JSC founder and President Mitchell Schwartz.

All are welcome to a ribbon cutting ceremony and Shabbat services and festivities on Friday, Sept. 25 at 5:45 p.m.; Temple Hillel B’nai Torah, 120 Corey St., West Roxbury.
