Temple Sinai of Swampscott and Marblehead
Temple Sinai is a contemporary, Conservative synagogue with a vibrant and committed community of members who strive to create a warm, welcoming, egalitarian and inclusive atmosphere for worship, learning and socialization. Temple Sinai embraces learners and doers and welcomes both interfaith and LGBTQ+ members. When you visit Temple Sinai, someone will come and say hello and make you feel at home! Many of our congregants are empty-nesters, and our vibrant social action and adult education programming allows everyone the space to dedicate their efforts where they feel most fulfilled. During the past year, our Knitting Club donated 6 full boxes of goods to the Lynn Shelter. We host the North Shore Jewish Family Service Food Bank, and we partner yearly with Marblehead’s Lutheran Church and the Islamic Society for the “Manna Project,” a communal effort to reduce food insecurity on the North Shore. Temple Sinai runs monthly adult education activities. Recent speakers have included Dr. Everett Fox and author Ariel Berger. Rabbi Michael Schwartz is a vibrant and haimish individual who successfully interweaves current events with the week’s Torah portion. Rabbi Schwartz holds two participatory classes a week, Torah Study, and Jewish Ethics. The majority of our events are both in-person and on Zoom and we welcome all queries and visits to Temple Sinai.

Walnut Street Synagogue of Chelsea
The Walnut Street Synagogue, also known as Congregation Agudas Sholom, is the oldest remaining synagogue in Chelsea and has been at its present location at the corner of Walnut and Fourth Streets since 1909. The origins of the congregation date back to 1887 when Jews began to arrive in Chelsea, escaping from the pogroms of Eastern Europe. When the shul opened, it was referred to as the “Queen of Synagogues” and was thought to be the largest in New England with a capacity of 1,109 in the second and third floor sanctuary. The carved wood Aron Kodesh (Torah Ark) was built by Boston-area cabinetmaker Sam Katz. The ceiling is embellished with a painting of the sky, complete with clouds, and a sunrise at the east end. At the west end is a painting of the tomb of Rachel. The wall frescoes include painted columns and symbols from Solomon’s Temple. The Walnut Street Synagogue was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. During the pandemic, the shul has become a partner congregation of the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program (CSP) that provides high quality virtual educational and cultural programming in an interactive format. Future plans include the establishment of a museum and cultural center within the synagogue to house artifacts of Chelsea’s Jewish legacy and to offer programs open to the entire community.

RABBI ETHAN ADLER
I am currently the rabbi at Congregation Beth David in Narragansett, Rhode Island, and guest rabbi at Sharah Zedek in Westerly, Rhode Island. In addition to leading services, I perform Jewish life cycle events, including baby naming, bar/bat mitzvot, funerals and weddings – both Jewish and interfaith.
I was born in Israel and moved to the United States when I was a young teenager. I graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a bachelor’s degree and received a master’s degree from Rhode Island College. I earned a certificate in thanatology from Bristol Community College and a certificate in gerontology from Rhode Island College.
In the past, I served as the teacher and education director in various Hebrew schools and synagogues in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I also served as summer chaplain at Camp Yawgoog for Scouts.
In addition to my temple responsibilities, I teach a variety of social science courses at the University of Rhode Island and Bristol Community College in Massachusetts.

Camp Young Judaea
Camp Young Judaea (YJ), located in Amherst, New Hampshire, is excited to open for its 85th season in June. Founded in 1939, YJ serves children ages 8-15 (completing grades 2-9). Located on 168 scenic wooded acres on the shores of Lake Baboosic in southern New Hampshire, our waterfront features two power boats for waterskiing, rafts and floats, numerous canoes, kayaks, sailboats, paddle boards and a brand-new aqua feature. Chelsea Jewish Lifecare
A NEW SPIN ON KOSHER FOOD
This is NOT your mother’s kosher food. These days the menus at the assisted living and skilled nursing residences on Chelsea Jewish Lifecare’s (CJL) Peabody and Chelsea campuses feature updated recipes using fresh, seasonal ingredients. But the classics are still very much in evidence: matzo ball soup, roast chicken and homemade rugelach make frequent appearances.
Chelsea Jewish Lifecare operates Cohen Florence Levine Estates Assisted Living, Florence & Chafetz Memory Care, the Leonard Florence Center, and the Katzman Family Center for Living in Chelsea, as well as Harriett and Ralph Kaplan Estates Assisted Living and Jeffrey and Susan Brudnick Center for Living in Peabody. The nonprofit has always stayed true to its Jewish roots. “We are committed to keeping the food Glatt kosher and upholding the Jewish traditions that are the very essence of the organization’s culture,” said Michael Millard, director of food service for CJL.

He noted that he makes all kinds of dishes. “My most requested dishes are meat (no cheese) lasagna, sweet and sour meatballs and, not surprisingly, traditional matzo ball soup. I make a great chicken soup,” he said with a smile.

Seaglass Village
Seaglass Village is a non-profit group of Neighbors Helping Neighbors to age in place. It connects volunteers with members to perform tasks that get difficult as people age. Examples of such tasks include changing a battery in a smoke detector, removing an air conditioner, doing light gardening, and transportation services. It also provides social activities for people to make and keep friends such as outings, discussion groups, educational events, friendly visits, and monthly check-ins.
Seaglass Village provides members and volunteers with opportunities to touch lives in small and meaningful ways and stay connected to their community.
Seaglass Village serves the Marblehead, Swampscott, and Nahant areas. It is part of the Village Movement. The very first Village, the Beacon Hill Village, began in Boston more than twenty years ago. Today there are more than 350 Villages throughout the U.S. Seaglass Village is a member of the National Village to Village Network, Inc., which local Villages join to receive technical support in the management of a Village. Seaglass Village uses the Village-to-Village software to help coordinate the match-up of member requests for services and volunteers to meet those requests. Members who are unable to use a computer can call the office with their requirements. Volunteers are screened before becoming part of the Seaglass Village network. “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.” – Albert Einstein’s advice to his son Eduard in February 1930.
I’m lucky in that running and later (after a hip replacement) cycling has been an essential part of my daily routine for most of my life. On the other hand, it’s never too late to start moving. We sometimes ride with an 82-year-old friend. Biking offers low-impact exercise with no lateral movement – which is easy on the knees and hips. Biking will also get the old ticker pumping in a positive way. And let’s not forget the juvenile joy of coasting!
Regular moderate exercise (referred to as Zone 2) has been shown to both extend life and improve life quality. Its benefits include, in addition to muscle tone maintenance, heart and brain health (some studies have linked regular exercise to lower incidence of Alzheimer’s). Check out the many Zone 2 videos on YouTube.
I’ve found that cycling improves not only physical balance, but life balance as well; an easy paced rhythmic ride is ideal for prayer or meditation. It might even be enough for you to ditch that therapist! For the social butterflies among you, cycling is a great way to catch up with friends and family, especially if you include a coffee and pastry break.
I ride the trails behind our house in all-weather except snow and ice, in which case I ride my bike on a trainer (which is always at the ready) while listening to audio books. With a trainer set-up, the weather will never interrupt the fun. Last year, I listened to 43 books and averaged 13,000 steps a day, all the while turning pedals on the trainer.
I do recommend woods and trail riding, especially rail trails rather than road riding for folks over 60, because it is virtually stress free – no cars. Many of the disused railways in New England have been turned into beautiful rail trails, perfect for cycling, with gorgeous views of marshes, meadows, streams, rivers, lakes. Don’t forget to do some research ahead of time to find that perfect repast.

Epstein Hillel School
At Epstein Hillel School, students of all ages have been busy celebrating Israel throughout the month of Iyar! We kicked off the festivities with our monthly Rosh Chodesh Word Challenge, which tasks students with submitting a poem, acrostic, or visual representation using at least five of ten given words, in Hebrew and English, related to the month. The winning selections are highlighted at that week’s Kabbalat Shabbat and students receive a small prize for their efforts. This year, students dug deep and gave it their all, crafting thoughtful and profound verses and creating beautiful artwork to show their steadfast connection to Israel.
On the heels of Rosh Chodesh, we delved into the modern Israeli holidays of Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. First, to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of Israel’s fallen soldiers, we gathered as a community on Yom HaZikaron in solemn remembrance. Our seventh and eighth grade students led a moving ceremony during which candles were lit, soldiers’ lives were commemorated, and we joined together in prayer and song. Then, to bask in Israel’s independence, EHS students spent the day enjoying Israeli foods by baking pita and squeezing fresh Jaffa orange juice, singing karaoke to Israeli songs, creating Israeli art, and moving their bodies to both traditional and current Israeli folk dances. There was a spirited energy in the air throughout the day as we celebrated and expressed our love for the modern state of Israel. Iyar is an extra special month, of course, but at EHS we work hard all year long to cultivate a love for Israel that lasts a lifetime!

Congressman Seth Moulton
Congressman Seth Moulton represents Massachusetts’ 6th District. He is a veteran, father, and Democrat who represents a new generation of leaders in Washington. Inspired to public service by the great Minister Rev. Peter Gomes, he joined the Marines in 2001, days after college graduation and a few months before the attacks on 9/11. His American High-Speed Rail Act is the most ambitious and forward-thinking infrastructure package before Congress today, and he recently wrote the G.I. Bill Repair Act to finally restore long-denied benefits to Black veterans of World War II.

State Rep. Jenny Armini, 8th Essex District
Golda was the name my Jewish father gave me whenever I exerted my strong will as a child. Of course, he was referring to Golda Meir, Israel’s own Iron Lady, who became prime minister the year I was born. I wouldn’t come to a full appreciation of Meir or the nation she bravely led until much later – really, until I stepped foot on Israeli soil as a congressional aide.
That transformational trip exposed me to the dynamic people and complex geopolitical and economic dynamics of the only democracy in the Middle East. I was privileged to visit nearly every corner, meeting with government and military officials, community and academic leaders, and representatives of Palestinian groups. But it was the Israeli people – their culture, history, architecture, food – that stole my heart. I can still see the bright pink flowers along streets and highways, the desert blooming, the air heavy with scent.
I’ve lost count of the highs and lows of Israeli politics since that trip. What hasn’t changed is the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship – from national security to economic partnerships. Our two countries share democratic values and a spirit of innovation. On this 75th anniversary of Israel’s founding, I remain grateful for that relationship and deeply committed to Israel’s continued vibrancy and success. No doubt, Golda would be proud.

Meir Panim As Israel emerges from the ravages of the pandemic, Meir Panim’s four branches continue to provide food security, in the form of ready-made meals and staple items, for its “regulars.” They include single-parent families, the elderly, and the working poor, whose numbers have skyrocketed since the onset of Covid19. “While it feels like we’re getting back to normal health-wise, the financial crisis continues,” observes Mimi Rozmaryn, Director of Global Development at Meir Panim. “We’re still preparing double the pre-2020 amount of meals in all our branches.” This year, Meir Panim welcomed an unexpected, new demographic: refugees from Ukraine. They started to trickle in around Purim and have been arriving in Israel in steadily increasing numbers.
While the various government agencies are scrambling to provide assistance, they clearly are unable to do it all alone and have been turning to organizations like Meir Panim. “We have the infrastructure, and we’re ready and happy to do whatever is needed,” said Mimi. Meir Panim doesn’t only work to feed the hungry; it strives to break the cycle of poverty from the source. In fulfillment of that undertaking, Meir Panim operates youth centers for at-risk youth in the southern border town of Sderot. In a community where 40 percent of young adults suffer from PTSD, programs like these have proved life-changing. In addition to leadership training and other programs, the centers have integrated a strong volunteering component, with strikingly positive results. Sderot teens are now in charge of packaging and distributing care packages for the isolated and elderly, as well as for soldiers at the local military outpost. “We can only hope that the situation continues to remain stable,” Mimi says. “We want our patrons, especially those who live alone and who suffered for two long years in isolation, to continue to feel safe and secure enough to come to our centers and gain from the social interaction — food for both the body and soul,” Mimi reflects.

Meir Panim: Breaking the cycle of poverty in Israel
Seeing how far Israel has come in just three-quarters of a century makes your heart burst with pride. But for all the incredible advances and rapid development, there remains a significant segment of society which, sadly, has been left on the sidelines. According to the most recent statistics, a whopping 27.8% of the population in the Jewish state – including 1,176,000 children – live below the poverty line.

Meir Panim distributes roughly one million meals each year to those in need from its five branches in Jerusalem, Tzfat, Tiberias, Or Akiva and Dimona. That, in addition to the operation of a free “market” for the distribution of farm-fresh produce, the provision of thousands of prepaid grocery shopping cards, and another 35,000 meals provided for at-risk children from disadvantaged families in high-poverty communities.

Happy Israel 75 from the Swartz and Shalom families!
Bringing my family to Israel was an unforgettable experience. Our extended family was able to share a behind-the-scenes trip to Israel that was entirely different than any of our previous visits to our homeland. Besides visiting the amazing sites of ancient Jaffa, and the Jewish, Christian and Muslim quarters in Jerusalem, we walked atop Masada, floated in the Dead Sea, visited Yad Vashem, and were privileged to witness first-hand Israel’s exploding culinary scene, including a workshop with Chef Yuval Attias, who has cooked for Presidents Clinton, Macron and Prime Minister Netanyahu, among others.
We learned that Israeli citizens live in a constant state of the unknown, given the threat of attacks by their many surrounding enemies, and yet they live their lives fully and inspirationally. We met with Jewish West Bank settlers to hear their perspective on the geo-politics of the area. Netflix’s “Fauda” came alive for us when we visited an IDF base and were given a lesson shooting Glock pistols with active Israeli special forces in the Golan Heights. We also came to understand that many of the world’s most advanced technologies and health care initiatives originate in our Jewish homeland, a country approximately the size of New Jersey.
It’s been 14 years since my last visit and to witness the phenomenal accomplishments of the country on its 75th birthday instilled in me a feeling of Jewish pride that fuels my volunteer and philanthropic efforts.

The Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies
Over a decade ago, the cofounders of the Holocaust Center, Boston North – the renowned Holocaust survivor Sonia Schreiber Weitz (1928-2010) and Harriet Wacks – began the search for a new home for their center. Their choice was Salem State University, and in 2013, the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS) was established there. The CHGS’s mission is to empower students, teachers, and community members in the fight against racism, ethnic hatred, and the erosion of democratic norms and institutions.
The CHGS is deeply committed to this mission and actively engages the community in these efforts. This year, we collaborated with over 150 curriculum directors and teachers from 15 different school districts to implement the new Genocide Education Act in our schools. We are expanding our graduate certificate program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies and enhancing our study and travel programs to educate and train the next generation of leaders in combating racism, antisemitism, mass violence, and genocide.
Our programs include public events, scholarly conversations, and workshops for educators, most of which are free of charge and open to the public. A highlight of our annual calendar is the Yom HaShoah Ceremony, with the next one scheduled for May 6, 2024.

Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters (JBBBS) continues to ensure that children and families in difficult circumstances and vulnerable adults are supported and connected to the community. Children’s Programs: JBBBS’s comprehensive mentoring program serves more than 250 children and teens, who are paired with a Big Brother or Big Sister, who provide role-modeling, encouragement, and friendship. Friend 2 Friend: More than 150 adults with disabilities are participating in JBBBS one-to-one community and MAGIC group programs, making friends, socializing, staying active, and connecting to the community. Camp and College Scholarships: Last year, JBBBS provided $320,000 in camp and college scholarships to past and current participants and the demand for these funds continues to grow. Walnut Street Synagogue of Chelsea
The ed, also known as Congregation Agudas Sholom, is the oldest remaining synagogue in Chelsea and has been at its present location at the corner of Walnut and Fourth Streets since 1909. The origins of the Congregation date back to 1887 when Jews began to arrive in Chelsea, escaping from the pogroms of Eastern Europe. When the shul opened, it was referred to as the “Queen of Synagogues” and was thought to be the largest in New England with a capacity of 1,109 in the second and third floor sanctuary. The carved wood Aron Kodesh (Torah Ark) was built by Boston-area cabinetmaker Sam Katz. The ceiling is embellished with a painting of the sky, complete with clouds, and a sunrise at the east end. At the west end is a painting of the tomb of Kings. The wall frescoes include painted columns and symbols from Solomon’s Temple.The Walnut Street Synagogue was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. During the pandemic, the shul has become a partner congregation of the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program (CSP) that provides high quality virtual educational and cultural programming in an interactive format. Future plans include the establishment of a museum and cultural center within the synagogue to house artifacts of Chelsea’s Jewish legacy and to offer programs open to the entire community. Yachad
Yachad supports thousands of children, teens, adults, and seniors with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism. We provide year-round programming, including 27 summer programs. Locally, Yachad New England runs daily social and recreational programs to enhance life skills and break social isolation. Some program favorites are cooking, art and music classes, improv and Jewish learning and even a Monday night bowling league! Yachad has high quality and interactive programs with a skilled staff that ensures that everyone participates at their capacity. Yachad’s clinical department offers thousands of hours of free counseling, referral and group support. Often, Yachad’s team steps up to help a family in their time of need while they are on waitlists for mental health treatment. Yachad provides reliable programming and services. It is an agency our Jewish community knows and trusts. Yachad is a magical place and a primary service provider offering Jewish content for individuals with disabilities. Weekly parsha activities, Jewish holiday celebrations, Hanukkah and Purim parties, and online learning are among the offerings. Yachad volunteers and our adults with diverse challenges go together to activities including Red Sox games, mini golfing, trampolining, kayaking and apple picking. Recently, 65 Yachad members and volunteers from Repair the World and Entwine picked hundreds of pounds of produce at Allandale Farms that was donated to Rosie’s Place and the Kosher Food Pantry.
