Epstein Hillel School

At Epstein Hillel School, students of all ages have been busy celebrating Israel throughout the month of Iyar! We kicked off the festivities with our monthly Rosh Chodesh Word Challenge, which tasks students with submitting a poem, acrostic, or visual representation using at least five of ten given words, in Hebrew and English, related to the month. The winning selections are highlighted at that week’s Kabbalat Shabbat and students receive a small prize for their efforts. This year, students dug deep and gave it their all, crafting thoughtful and profound verses and creating beautiful artwork to show their steadfast connection to Israel. On the heels of Rosh Chodesh, we delved into the modern Israeli holidays of Yom HaZikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut. First, to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of Israel’s fallen soldiers, we gathered as a community on Yom HaZikaron in solemn remembrance. Our seventh and eighth grade students led a moving ceremony during which candles were lit, soldiers’ lives were commemorated, and we joined together in prayer and song. Then, to bask in Israel’s independence, EHS students spent the day enjoying Israeli foods by baking pita and squeezing fresh Jaffa orange juice, singing karaoke to Israeli songs, creating Israeli art, and moving their bodies to both traditional and current Israeli folk dances. There was a spirited energy in the air throughout the day as we celebrated and expressed our love for the modern state of Israel. Iyar is an extra special month, of course, but at EHS we work hard all year long to cultivate a love for Israel that lasts a lifetime!

Consulate General of Israel to New England

With Israeli tourism taking off post-COVID, we look forward to welcoming you to Israel as we gear up for our modern 75th birthday. Exploring our diverse country has never been easier, with two carriers now offering frequent direct flights from Boston to Tel Aviv. Whether discovering history at one of our many fascinating museums (Israel Museum in Jerusalem is a must-see), adventuring over our diverse terrain, relaxing at the beach, spiritually connecting at our religious sites, or enjoying our exciting cuisine, Israel has something to offer everyone! If seeking the off-beaten path, Israel has many rarely discovered places, such as the highly recommended breathtaking Bell Caves in Beit Guvrin-Maresha National Park; the 1,200-year-old underground Pool of the Arches in Ramla; one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements on Earth in Acre/Akko; and the ancient Jewish ruins of Tspori. Finally, of course, traditional wonders like the ancient streets of Jerusalem, the vibrant city life of Tel Aviv, the picturesque beaches of Caesarea or Eilat, the history of Masada or the Qumran Caves, the beauty of Haifa or Tiberias, and countless others are always great to see and experience. So, whether you travel to Israel to visit family, take part in our 75th celebrations, seek adventure, or walk ancient history, we look forward to seeing you in Israel soon!

Meir Panim As Israel emerges from the ravages of the pandemic, Meir Panim’s four branches continue to provide food security, in the form of ready-made meals and staple items, for its “regulars.” They include single-parent families, the elderly, and the working poor, whose numbers have skyrocketed since the onset of Covid19. “While it feels like we’re getting back to normal health-wise, the financial crisis continues,” observes Mimi Rozmaryn, Director of Global Development at Meir Panim. “We’re still preparing double the pre-2020 amount of meals in all our branches.” This year, Meir Panim welcomed an unexpected, new demographic: refugees from Ukraine. They started to trickle in around Purim and have been arriving in Israel in steadily increasing numbers. While the various government agencies are scrambling to provide assistance, they clearly are unable to do it all alone and have been turning to organizations like Meir Panim. “We have the infrastructure, and we’re ready and happy to do whatever is needed,” said Mimi. Meir Panim doesn’t only work to feed the hungry; it strives to break the cycle of poverty from the source. In fulfillment of that undertaking, Meir Panim operates youth centers for at-risk youth in the southern border town of Sderot. In a community where 40 percent of young adults suffer from PTSD, programs like these have proved life-changing. In addition to leadership training and other programs, the centers have integrated a strong volunteering component, with strikingly positive results. Sderot teens are now in charge of packaging and distributing care packages for the isolated and elderly, as well as for soldiers at the local military outpost. “We can only hope that the situation continues to remain stable,” Mimi says. “We want our patrons, especially those who live alone and who suffered for two long years in isolation, to continue to feel safe and secure enough to come to our centers and gain from the social interaction — food for both the body and soul,” Mimi reflects.

To contribute to this incredible effort, visit, call the toll-free number at 877-736-6283, or send a gift in the mail to American Friends of Meir Panim at 88 Walton Street, Suite B1, Brooklyn, NY 11206-4479. All donations made in the US are tax deductible under EIN# 20-1582478.

Temple Ahavat Achim Gloucester

The words that newcomers most often use to describe us are warm and welcoming. As the only Jewish institution on Cape Ann for well over 100 years, we have developed a culture of inclusion. We are affiliated with the Conservative movement, but our members include Jews of all stripes, as well as interfaith families. We offer traditional services, new variations, a broad menu of opportunities for learning, and a full slate of cultural and social activities. We share prayers, learning, arts and culture, holidays, good works, adventures, and the joys of a supportive, stable community. Because our area features natural beauty and a creative population, we are particularly open to tweaking our traditions, rituals, and get-togethers. We have the world’s only lobster trap menorah. We enjoy Shabbat dinners at members’ houses. We have featured klezmer cruises, ice cream socials, (very) amateur theatricals, family photo exhibits, etc. We have a strong sense of social responsibility and engagement, in our community and in the wider world. Our religious school draws families from far beyond our geographical area. Our children access their Jewish heritage through joy, respect, rigor, and creativity. While we hope that our children will have a Jewish future, we offer them a rewarding Jewish present. Past, present, and future intertwine as we find deep meaning in our linked Jewish lives.

Walnut Street Synagogue of Chelsea

The Walnut Street Synagogue, also known as Congregation Agudas Sholom, is the oldest remaining synagogue in Chelsea and has been at its present location at the corner of Walnut and Fourth Streets since 1909. The origins of the congregation date back to 1887 when Jews began to arrive in Chelsea, escaping from the pogroms of Eastern Europe. When the shul opened, it was referred to as the “Queen of Synagogues” and was thought to be the largest in New England with a capacity of 1,109 in the second and third floor sanctuary. The carved wood Aron Kodesh (Torah Ark) was built by Boston-area cabinetmaker Sam Katz. The ceiling is embellished with a painting of the sky, complete with clouds, and a sunrise at the east end. At the west end is a painting of the tomb of Rachel. The wall frescoes include painted columns and symbols from Solomon’s Temple. The Walnut Street Synagogue was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. During the pandemic, the shul has become a partner congregation of the Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program (CSP) that provides high quality virtual educational and cultural programming in an interactive format. Future plans include the establishment of a museum and cultural center within the synagogue to house artifacts of Chelsea’s Jewish legacy and to offer programs open to the entire community.

Where Should You Live When Living with Memory Loss?

Many families think that home and familiar surroundings will be the best place for their loved one facing memory loss, such as with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia. Yet, in our experience, people with memory loss, including mild cognitive impairment, do much better with constant companionship, stimulating programs, and structured activities throughout the day and evening.

Our secure Compass Memory Support Neighborhood® is a safe and nurturing environment where not only residents’ physical needs are met, but the symptoms of their memory loss or are actually being treated. Our research-driven method for treating memory loss includes dignified care, individualized services, a full calendar of structured, socially engaging activities, and a brain-boosting dining program inspired by the Mediterranean diet. We believe that the best Alzheimer’s treatment programs are not medication-based, but rather social based incorporating programs that aim to reduce the symptoms of memory loss and focus on the person’s remaining abilities.

At Cornerstone at Canton, we’ve worked with many families who have faced the tough reality that it may be time for their loved one to move to a more supportive living environment. It can initially be met with feelings of anxiety and guilt, but when families see positive changes and a happier sense of well-being in their loved one, they know they made the right move.

Better hearing will make retirement more enjoyable!

Hearing loss is a common problem as we age, and it can affect all aspects of our lives. For example, difficulty hearing may reduce your enjoyment of theater, movies and dining out. Sometimes people complain that it seems like everyone is mumbling and that it is much hard to hear in noise and groups. Often hearing loss happens gradually, and others may notice it before you do. When one person in a family has a hearing loss the whole family has a hearing loss, because it affects everyday communication and connections.

Hearing loss is a medical problem that requires help from a health care professional. All adults over the age of 50 should have a baseline evaluation by a Doctor of Audiology. Early identification and treatment will improve your quality of life and help you keep your brain healthy. If hearing aids are suggested, try them to see firsthand the amazing improvement. Using well fit hearing aids has been proven to reduce social isolation, depression and stress, all factors that caused the Lancet Commission on dementia to conclude that treating hearing loss is the single most effective thing we can do to reduce the risk of cognitive decline. In this way, hearing aids are like vitamins for our brains!
